Bosch Power Tools South Africa is assisting the Vrygrond community outside Muizenberg in Cape Town by donating a range of power tools to equip a proposed workshop at Butterfly Way Educare for Vuyolwethu, a non-profit organisation based in the area.
Vrygrond is reputedly the oldest informal settlement in South Africa. Originally a settlement of fisher folk who wanted to live close to the sea and their work, it has since grown into a settlement of some 18 500 residents.
Roughly half of the population is housed in low-cost housing, with the balance in self-erected shacks of board and corrugated iron. Based in Vrygrond, Vuyolwethu is currently negotiating for the lease of the premises at 1 Vrygrond Drive, where Butterfly Way Educare is situated.
Gary Blume, a volunteer from the Muizenberg community, explains that Butterfly Way Educare focuses on preschool and primary education. In the last year it has established an aftercare facility for older children.
“We have started a workshop for the boys, where they will be taught basic wood/metal work by a qualified artisan, who is now retired.” It is hoped that the workshop will ultimately expand and be able to offer trade skills such as motor mechanics, panel beating, welding, construction work and carpentry.
“We approached Bosch Power Tools South Africa, as its products are rugged and dependable. It was very generous in donating a wide range of the tools that we require for this important project, which will go a long way towards fostering entrepreneurship and combating unemployment in Vrygrond,” Blume explains.
Bosch Professional Power Tools Senior Marketing Brand Manager Campbell Mhodi says the company was more than happy to assist Voyulwethu as part of its corporate social responsibility initiative, which is aimed at empowering local communities and making a tangible difference to the quality of life of residents.
Bosch Power Tools donated two angle grinders (115 mm and 230 mm), a jigsaw, a router, a circular saw, a belt sander, an orbital sander, a polisher, a mitre saw, a planer, a drill for wood and concrete respectively and a screwdriver.
