SAIMC Tshwane – November Newsletter and Invite to social

Past technical Evening:

For our last technical evening of the year we were honoured to have Mr. Rob MacKenzie MD of Endress & Hauser and vice president of SAIMC on his birthday present to a full house about “Industrial Internet of Things (IIOT)”. The presentation presented was an adapted version of that presented earlier in the year as part of the “Connected Industries” Conference that took place in parallel to the Africa Automation Fair.

Topics discussed included: “what is IIOT and Industry 4.0”, practical examples, why we should care about it and what we should be doing in preparation for it… The presentation also explored what was needed for 4th Industrial revolution i.e. data, communications, etc. It posed the question if IIOT is “hype or hope” along with which problems / needs are solved / addressed by it and what the risks are… An important consideration raised is the fact that the traditional automation hierarchy would be forever changed by IOT in that for instance instruments now are directly “connected” to “The cloud” which allowed for life cycle management which translates to reduced maintenance cost…

From the presentation it was also evident that some low hanging fruit exist in the form of retrofitting existing installations to bring them in line with modern installations thereby leveraging advances afforded by technology. The presentation concluded with a live demo illustrating what was already possible with some of the later technology. The presentation is available so feel free to enquire.

Technical Evening Invite:

We will resume presentations again early next year starting on 7th of February with the AGM and a presentation. More will be communicated re this closer to the time. Should you be interested to be part of the committee please contact us. We will be closing off the year with a social and committee meeting. Please feel free to join us at Cheers in Pierre van Ryneveld Wednesday 1st of November at 18:00.

Some brief feedback re past period:

FIRST ROBOTICS SA: 1st of all thank you to our media partners promoting FIRST, much appreciated. Then I am also happy to advise that following our NAT Com meeting last week it seems we have reached agreement in concluding SAIMC support for FTC program. Some final minor changes have to be made to MoU then it may be signed, and the agreement officiate. More will be communicated in due course and it is hoped our media partners will assist in formulating both a marketing and communication strategy in conjunction with FIRST SA who can promote SAIMC at 160+ schools and 10 events nationally per annum placing our profession on the map. We also hope to get exposure at SCI BONA and at least TUT in the form of some permanent branding as these institutions are visited by thousands of people per annum.

Industry Trade Association (etc): Petrus met with gents from CSIR who is busy reviewing which of around 30 industries / sectors to develop further in terms of research & development. While it is not likely for C&I to feature on its own given mature status of the industry it is however hoped we will still feature as part of IOT / Industry 4.0 and Robotics space. We hope to have feedback before year end. Also as a side note Mark has arranged for Petrus and him to have a seat on another committee around clustering which also looks at promoting localization along with supplier development and it is hoped that this group may assist in development of business if not industry. Ms. Liz Hart from Manufacturing Indaba also indicated that she is making head way with SAIMC application / request for funding for education and will communicate more re it once official.

SAIMC NAT COM: The next major activity planned is a “Bosberaad” or “Strat session” to review progress and goals. The position for next year’s VP also has been filled and if not done so already will be communicated via official channels in due course. Congratulations to the lady on behalf of Tshwane 😉. Also note that Mr. Rob MacKenzie will assume the office of president and more will communicated re it too from NAT. Once again congratulations to Rob.

Petrus will be speaking on behalf of SAIMC at the upcoming energy efficiency conference to be held on 14 and 15th of November. The subject is “role that Industrial Automation plays in this aspect”. Please check online for more info:
