The Sasol Inzalo Foundation (SalF) has launched a school leadership guide to assist school principals to build a culture of academic excellence at their schools, particularly in Maths, Science and Technology.
Titled “Shifting Paradigms: Changing Practice – Value-based instructional leadership in schools,” the book was launched today at Sasol’s global headquarters in Johannesburg in a ceremony attended by senior government officials as well as leading authorities in education.
SalF Chairperson Dr Yvonne Muthien said the book is an addition to the 180 volumes of books developed by the SaIF in the last 9 years and is based on the findings of a longitudinal study the SaIF undertook in 2012 to understand the effect of various school leadership and management intervention programmes on participants and the schools they lead.
“The research findings suggested the need to develop resources and tools that will equip school leaders to deal with many of the contextual challenges that they face daily especially as they seek to improve the functioning of their schools,” said Muthien. The book is also informed by the experiences of the Educational Management and Governance Development (EMGD) officials as they monitor schools around the country.
Established in 2008, SalF has played a pivotal role in driving excellence in the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education at all levels of the education value chain mainly in previously disadvantaged sectors of the South African society. To date, some of the SaIF’s notable achievements include the development of 180 natural science, technology and mathematics textbook titles which reach more than 6 million learners and teachers annually across the country. These are developed together with the Department of Basic Education and other strategic partners.
