Some brief feedback re past period:
FIRST ROBOTICS SA (FRSA): The main interaction from our side as Tshwane re the FTC program is to look at ways to make programme self sufficient so if you have ideas feel free to contribute. Petrus has engaged with ABSA who has funding available and have asked Johannes to follow up as funds are given to tertiary institutions direct to use (for education). It is envisaged given non-profit nature of FRSA that main sources of income will always be from grants and sponsorships and hence business plan is to be developed reflecting needs along with benefits of the program so applications may be submitted… Then we received following email from FTC leadership team (adapted):
“To grow FTC and expand the number of FTC teams in South Africa TUT want to implement the following:
- New team: Rent a Robot: (Deposit R5000 refundable minus rental and broken part replacement cost) R300 per month or R2000 for the season (August 2018 to March 2019) (Replacement Value R24 000). To reduce the start-up cost for Rookie FTC teams, they will rent out a total of 10 FTC Robot Kits to new teams with the following components: TERTIX WRO Competition Set (Part list attached), 1 x Rev Expansion Hub, Encoder Level converters. To participate in FTC a team needs to supply their own Smart Phones and Logitech Gaming devices.
- Team Training:
To skill FTC teams FRSA is planning a 3 Day workshop: 1 Day Team business model, time planning, budget, outreach, volunteering and mentorship, 1 Day mechanical assembly and engineering notebook, 1 Day – Software setup, programming and autonomous mode. Proposed dates are late November 2018 or in the week of 3 to 8 December 2018 (This is after FTC kick off and FLL Nationals and early enough for the scrimmages in January/February). This training can be presented by experiences FTC teams as part of their outreach and team fund raising. If you know of schools that would like to start with FTC and would like to make use of the above options, please let FRSA know.”
SAIMC NAT COM: The “Bosberaad” took place on 9th of March and was attended by close to 25 very senior people across country and also Zambia from industry. The key outcomes are to focus on:
- Training & development
- SAIMC Growth
- Automation Thought Leadership
More will be communicated re it in due course with the next action to be to appoint team leaders for the respective five (5) year projects. The AGM followed the strategy session were Annemarie was voted in as President and Pregs from Tshwane as Vice President. We wish them both well with taking organization to next level.
Petrus is also to work with Mr. Maartens in firming up MOU with AREI. At present there appears to have been some leadership changes so progress has been delayed.
Internet of Things (IIOT) portfolio/ forum: is being headed up by Mr. Marc van Pelt of P&F who has already started to engage with Government re role of SAIMC can play in this regard. A couple of us also attended the TEDA event re the subject.
All the technical evenings for the year have been booked and we look forward to hosting you:
Kindly note that the next event will take place at the offices of the The National Laboratory Association (NLA), more information to follow.
Nothing to report, to look at feasibility to start up the branch this year.
Thank you kindly to our patrons for ongoing support:
Other items we may wish to conclude this year includes setting up own bank account also (Jurie).
