SKF supplies large gear couplings to key power and automation engineering customer

When SKF South Africa was approached by a longstanding customer to assist with the selection of a gear coupling for a Russian potash fertilizer plant in Q1 2019, the global bearing and rotating technology specialist rose to the occasion, nominating the rugged 130GC Gear Coupling with special tangential keyways for this application.

“A combination of the excellent work we previously conducted for the customer on their large SKF couplings, our renowned product quality and our exceptional global technical support and aftersales service capabilities, motivated them to seek our expertise when they required a superior-quality, reliable gear coupling to meet the harsh potash environment,” explains Frans Odendaal, SKF Product Manager: Power Transmissions. He adds that SKF’s capabilities to machine bore to specified requirements also placed SKF as the customer’s preferred gear coupling partner.


“Customers prefer dealing with a partner that can support them locally and once the product is commissioned they can rest assured in the knowledge that they can rely on SKF’s support anywhere in the world due to the company’s seamless global synergy,” notes Odendaal.

This unique project saw SKF collaborate with its overseas counterparts in order to offer the customer the best possible solution. The South African team produced Quick drawing for approval by Singapore PT support team and for presentation at the quoting stage.

The gear coupling is currently being manufactured in Korea with delivery expected in July 2019. The customer will be responsible for installation and commissioning and Odendaal adds that SKF has previously supplied the customer with information on correct bore tolerances and grease types to ensure reliable operating and extended life cycle of the gear coupling.

The 130 GC coupling is a standard within the SKF range of robust gear couplings which are perfectly suited to a vast range of applications with unparalleled bore capacities as well as low speed and high torque which can be rated up to 1,310kNm in standard materials that can be upgrade on request.
