Join SecMet (Pty) Ltd at the Sasolburg Petrochemical Roadshow, October 2024

Founded in 1996 as a pioneering metallurgical engineering consulting firm, SecMet has built a legacy of excellence in the field of metallurgy, welding engineering, material science and quality engineering. Our offering now also includes on-site material condition assessments, in-situ heat treatment as required for pre- or Post Weld Heat Treatments (PWHT) following repair or construction.
Our expertise in metallurgy allows us to transform complex material challenges into effective solutions, whether these are projects related to material characterisation (testing) or selection, failure analyses, fitness for service evaluations or remnant life studies.
Today, SecMet is an ISO 9001 certified company and proudly holds certifications in ISO 45001:2018 and ISO 14001. Our proficient team includes multiple graduate metallurgical engineers, qualified welding engineers, highly skilled welding inspectors and a compliment of laboratory and heat treatment technicians. SecMet’s laboratory is accredited under SANAS (ISO 17025) as technical facility T0838 and upholds the highest standards for materials testing. Our advanced facilities include equipment for mechanical, metallographic, and corrosion testing. The compliment of testing equipment spans from various hardness testers (Vickers, Brinell, Rockwell, micro Vickers), multiple creep testing rigs, a 600 kN tensile tester, bending to ASTM and EN-compliant impact testing machines. For detailed analysis, we use optical and stereo microscopes, a state-of-the-art JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS).

Our on-site services include replication, hardness testing, wall and coating thickness assessments. We also offer comprehensive heat treatment, including pre- and post- weld treatments, degassing, and normalising, services to ensure optimal material performance and integrity.
As equipment and plants exceed their original design lifespans, assessing their fitness for service becomes vital, especially after damage such as fire exposure. SecMet provides Fitness-For-Service (FFS) assessments to evaluate the structural integrity of flawed or degraded components. We use both theoretical and practical expertise, following standards such as BS7910 and API 579-1 / ASME FFS-1 2021, to ensure safe operation, minimal downtime and reduced costs.
Remaining Life Assessments (RLA) offer essential insights into the condition of equipment, helping owners make informed decisions about inspection intervals and equipment replacement or retirement. By evaluating the current equipment state and degradation, RLAs optimise maintenance schedules, ensures safe operation, efficient and cost-effectiveness use of equipment throughout its service life.
SecMet’s quality engineering team ensures oversight of pressurized equipment manufacturing and installation by integrating welding and coating inspections with support from metallurgical engineers. We facilitate material identification, dimensional and fit-up evaluations, detailed welding inspections, and reviews of data books and Post Weld Heat Treatment (PWHT) procedures. Our services ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, providing thorough quality and safety assurance throughout the project lifecycle.
SecMet specialises in developing and optimising welding techniques and procedures to resolve manufacturing and welding challenges. We oversee and assess both mechanical and non-destructive testing for procedure qualification and industry compliance. Our services include welding optimisation, Procedure Qualification Record (PQR) and Welding Procedure Specification (WPS) design, and welder qualification certification (WPQs). Supported by our SANAS (ISO 17025) accredited testing facilities, we use advanced welding software to manage documentation. We comply with key welding standards like API 1104, AWS D1.1, ASME IX, and EN 15614 or EN 9606.
SecMet conduct forensic engineering investigations for law firms, insurance companies, manufacturers, and industrial facilities. Detailed examinations of accidents and failures allows for reconstructing the sequence of events and to identify their root cause(s). We investigate various components such as boilers, processing equipment, valves, pressurized systems, metal structures, tanks etc. Our thorough approach helps clients understand the underlying degradation mechanisms and prevent future failures.
Considering the above it is no wonder that the company catchphrase reads: “SecMet, where Materials and engineering meet.”
