ROMPCO champions resilience and innovation for a transformed Southern Africa

Resilience and innovation are at the core of progress, especially in regions where challenges often seem insurmountable. The Republic of Mozambique Pipeline Investments Company (ROMPCO) is not just an energy sector participant but a catalyst for transformative change across Southern Africa. Through its corporate social investment (CSI) strategy, ROMPCO is committed to fostering sustainable growth and long-term impact, addressing socio-economic challenges, and empowering communities.

“ROMPCO’s mission goes beyond providing energy. We aim to be a beacon of hope, building a legacy of empowerment, progress, and resilience. Our initiatives are designed to uplift communities, address root causes of challenges, and create environments where people can thrive,” comments Chuma Mxo, Manager: Branding, Communications & CSI, ROMPCO.

ROMPCO’s commitment to education is demonstrated through its ‘Keep a Girl Child in School Programme’, which provides essential sanitary products to support young girls. The programme has expanded to include hygiene packs for boys, ensuring that over 7 000 learners in Mpumalanga, South Africa, and Guijá, Mozambique, have the tools they need to remain focused on their studies.

Partnering with Osizweni, ROMPCO supports educational programmes for ten secondary schools in the Badplaas Circuit, enhancing learning in gateway subjects like Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and Life Sciences. “Our mobile science laboratory and vacation camps are more than just learning aids; they are hubs of creativity and innovation. By providing hands-on experimentation, we nurture curiosity and critical thinking among learners, helping shape the leaders of tomorrow,” adds Mxo.

In collaboration with the Mpumalanga Department of Education, ROMPCO honours top achievers in STEM subjects through the Grade 12 Merit Awards. These awards encourage students to pursue higher education and acknowledge the critical role of educators. “Recognising academic excellence is a key part of our strategy to inspire and motivate future innovators,” said Mxo.

ROMPCO’s intervention at Isifisosethu Primary School in Mpumalanga, where it built new classrooms and secured the premises, is a testament to its commitment to educational development. This project, carried out with Ride4Hope and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, addressed overcrowding and safety issues, creating a conducive learning environment for 1 600 learners.

Following a tragic incident near Tambo Memorial Hospital, ROMPCO pledged funds for infrastructure improvements, underscoring its commitment to enhancing healthcare facilities. “Our response was about more than just rebuilding; it was about ensuring that communities have access to safe, reliable healthcare,” highlights Mxo.

The Chokwé Community Development Centre (CDC) in Mozambique focuses on agriculture, skill development, and sustainability. The initiative addresses poverty and fosters self-reliance. “The CDC is a hub of opportunity, giving communities along the Mozambique to Secunda Pipeline (MSP) the tools they need to thrive,” says Mxo.

Responding to logistical challenges faced by geology students at Eduardo Mondlane University, ROMPCO donated a 27-seater mini-bus and committed to covering transport expenses for field studies in Tete Province. “Our support for higher education is about ensuring that students have the resources they need to gain practical experience,” notes Mxo.

ROMPCO’s commitment to community upliftment includes its efforts to provide electricity to remote areas. The Funhalouro Electricity Connection project established domestic connections for 30 homes, supported by the installation of a 50Kva transformer. “By bringing power to these communities, we are illuminating paths to brighter futures, enhancing safety, and opening new economic opportunities,” says Mxo.

Additional Projects Across Mozambique and South Africa

  • Construction of rural facilities, including schools, health centres, and bakeries since 2003.
  • Donation of over 24 t of drought-resistant seeds to farmers in Inhambane, Gaza, and Maputo.
  • Delivery of COVID-19 aid and refurbishment of clinics and schools to support local healthcare and education.

“Each of these initiatives represents our broader mission to uplift communities along the MSP. ROMPCO is committed to driving sustainable development and ensuring that even the most remote areas are part of our region’s progress,” concludes Mxo.
