Women’s Month: Merewent woman turns passion for technology into thriving PC repair business

Growing up in Clausia Road in Merewent – an area affectionately known as Noddy Town – Natasha “Tasha” Moonsamy always enjoyed learning new things. Today, the Merewent resident is putting that passion to work after completing two nationally recognised ICT qualifications through Engen’s Global Citizen Development Programme (EGCDP) and launching her own computer repair business.

The aspiring entrepreneur completed the IT Technical Support (NQF Level 4) and IT Systems Development (NQF Level 5) qualifications, graduating in March this year.

Inspired by the practical skills she gained during the programme, Natasha has since established Tasha’s PC Repairs, offering affordable computer repair and support services to the local community.

Her business provides PC hardware repairs, upgrades and component replacements, including battery replacements, as well as computer clean-ups, storage upgrades, file transfers to external drives and professional file organisation.

“The course opened my mind to so much more,” says Natasha.

“I enjoyed everything about it. The theory challenged me to think differently, while the practical side was amazing because I got to work with my own hands. I loved it so much that it inspired me to start my own PC repair business.”

As South Africa celebrates Women’s Month, Natasha’s story demonstrates how education, determination and entrepreneurship can create opportunities while challenging stereotypes about women in the technology sector.

She says the programme equipped her with the technical skills, confidence and industry recognised qualifications needed to pursue a career in information technology.

“This ICT course gave me skills that employers are looking for. It also built my confidence and strengthened my CV. I now have the technical knowledge and certification to apply for entry level IT jobs.”

Like many students entering the world of technology, Natasha initially found the technical language and coding challenging.

“The most difficult part was adjusting to all the new technical terms, jargon and concepts, especially learning coding. But with practice and help from the facilitators, it became easier. It also taught me how to manage my time effectively.”

While she continues growing her business, Natasha hopes to one day specialise in cloud computing, networking or cyber security before fulfilling another dream of teaching information technology to others.

“I want to help mentor other young women in technology and teach others so they can gain knowledge and skills in this remarkably fast-growing field.”

Natasha has a simple but powerful message for other women this Women’s Month.

“Believe in yourself and take up space. Don’t let anyone tell you something is not for you or that you can’t do it. We are capable, we are smart and we belong in every room, no matter which field that may be.”

For Natasha, Women’s Month is a celebration of resilience and opportunity.

“It is about honouring the women who came before us while creating opportunities for those who will come after us. Keep pushing, never stop growing and never stop moving forward. The sky is the limit.”
