A Decade of Uptime: Experience the Severe-Duty Workhorses Powering Mining
Electra Mining attendees get a front-row seat to WEG’s newest severe-duty motors.
Mining machines such as rock crushers, pumps, and conveyors require powerful motors. But producing high starting and peak torque is not enough for ongoing performance.
Heavy-duty industrial motors may have the power, but they lack sufficiently robust enclosures, seals, heat dissipation, and other measures that ensure longer lifespans in harsh environments such as at mining sites. Severe-duty motors handle those conditions.
A decade-plus of reliable performance
In harsher conditions, motors need additional features:
- Environmental conditions such as high ambient temperatures, abrasive and magnetic dust, rain and flooding, and corrosive compounds.
- Supporting heavy machinery such as crushers, conveyor belts, pumps, and gearboxes that produce excessive vibrations causing misalignments and bearing damage.
- Sudden stops and over-speeding, variable shifts in speed for process control, and inconsiderate operators can cause mechanical damage.
The design of severe-duty motors include features such as heavy-duty cast-iron frames, end shields, terminal boxes rated at least IP66, special shaft seals and bearing insulators, and Class H insulation (up to 180°C thermal capacity).
With such features and mindful maintenance, a severe-duty motor can perform reliably for years, says Fanie Steyn, LV and HV Executive for WEG Africa’s Electric Motor division.
“A severe duty motor that suits its purpose can deliver more than a decade of consistent performance. There was a time when mines had to prioritise between long-term performance and energy efficiency, but that’s changed with IE3 and higher energy standards, proliferating through MEPS adoption. A quality severe-duty motor returns its investment costs quickly through its energy savings.”

Severe-duty motors operate where others cannot
Right-sizing motors is fundamental for performance and efficiency, and mining sites handpick motors for the best results. They don’t also want the burden of mulling whether a motor is tough-enough for the job.
“Our WEG W22 models account for all severe conditions, from overrated performance, aerodynamic cooling, and enhanced lubrication to easier lifting features, stronger feet, and anti-corrosive paint that exceeds IEEE841 motor conditions. We also meet IE3, IE4 or IE5 standards,” says Steyn.
Severe-duty motors are the workhorses of the African mining industry. The latest models focus on combining features to withstand harsh operating conditions for thousands of hours, with simplified maintenance requirements and the best energy efficiency.
